Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

(IATA: GAU, ICAO: VEGT), also known as Guwahati International Airport and formerly as Borjhar Airport, is the airport of Guwahati, Assam, India. The airport is managed by Airports Authority of India and also serves as Indian Air Force base. It is named after Gopinath Bordoloi who was a freedom frighter and also the first CM of Assam after independence.

Facilities:

The airport is undergoing renovations to enable it to handle increased air traffic. The upgrade is due to be completed by the end of 2009. The overhaul will include cosmetic and operational changes. This will include an A380 ready runway and Jetways in the terminal. The Airport Authority of India has plan to make this airport a major international airport of India connecting mainly the south east Asia with India
GUWAHATI CITY
Guwahati is capital city of Assam. It is commonly referred to as the Gate way of northeastern India. It is present on the north eastern side of Assam in between the eastern hill flanks of the Himalayan ranges. To the all seven north eastern states Guwahati is the gate way. Guwahati is located at an altitude of 55 m above the mean sea level on the banks of the river Brahmaputra. The three national highways namely 31, 37 and 40 have Guwahati at their junction point. The river Brahmaputra splits the city of Guwahati into two parts, the north Guwahati and south Guwahati. In summer the temperatures may reach a maximum of 38oC, while in winter months the minimum temperatures may to 10oC. An annual rainfall of 180 cm is received. The suitable period for the tourist visit is during the months of October to April.

The God of Love, Kamrup is believed to be borne in Guwahati. One of the important shrines among the tantric shrines of Shakti is the Kamakhya. The noted Kamakhya temple of Guwahati is located on the top of Nilachal hill. People of Guwahati offer the sacrifices of animals at this temple to please the Goddess. A further above this temple, is the temple of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari. The Guwahati city can be viewed as if one is viewing from a bird's eye. In the middle of the river Brahmaputra in one of its island is the famous temple of Shiva.

A well known house of the ancient astronomy and astrology is the temple of nine planets. This temple is also referred as the Navagraha temple. It is situated on a hill present on the eastern side of Guwahati. The nine planets encircle the central Lingam in the temple. Lalitha, Kantha and Sandhya streams pass through a shine of saga Vashista, called as the Vashista Ashram. The largest natural zoo in India is situated at Guwahati. The Assam's rich and glorious past is visible from the articles preserved in the Anthropological, State and Cottage industries museums. Srimanta Sankaradevi Kalakshetra and Guwahati planetarium are famous in the region. The tiger project of Assam is at Manas wildlife sanctuary. Pabitora, Hajo, Chandubi, Sualkuchi, Tezpur and Barpeta are some of the places around Guwahati that have tourist attractions. Bhog Bihu is the famous festival of Guwahati.
